A Conversation that Changed Everything

By Katie Porter, Portsmouth Mediation Service .
My work as an Assessment Officer with Portsmouth Mediation Service is aimed at helping neighbours who get caught up in conflict and disagreements to repair the harm and restore their relationships. It is extremely uplifting for me when I can help neighbours in difficult, challenging situations to better understand each other and to reconnect. This recent story is a good example. (the names of the people involved have been changed)
This case involves two neighbouring households who have experienced challenges that affected their comfort and wellbeing at home. Through sharing their experiences and perspectives, both parties developed a greater understanding of one another’s circumstances and identified positive steps to improve their relationship moving forward.
Amina moved to the area with her four children after leaving an abusive relationship and seeking a safe, stable environment for her family. Understandably, her past experiences have made her cautious about interactions that feel unexpected or confrontational. At the same time, she has been adjusting to family life in a new home and has reflected on how everyday household activity may sometimes be heard by neighbours.
Rahman, who has lived in his property since 2016 with his partner and mother-in-law, works night shifts and relies on daytime rest. His family experienced ongoing disruption from noise they could hear from the flat above, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours. As concerns grew, Rahman attempted to address the situation directly, but later recognised that some of his approaches may have unintentionally caused Amina distress.
During restorative discussions, both parties were able to explain the impact the situation had on them. Rahman gained a better understanding of Amina’s experiences and why unexpected contact could feel intimidating. He expressed regret for any fear his actions may have caused and clarified that this had never been his intention.
Amina, in turn, developed a greater appreciation of the effect that late-night noise can have on a household with varying work and sleep patterns. She acknowledged occasions when noise may have caused disturbance and agreed to continue taking practical steps to minimise this, including reducing noise after midnight and making adjustments within the home to limit sound transmission.
Importantly, both households identified shared values: a desire for peaceful, safe homes, strong family relationships, and positive neighbourly interactions. They agreed that future concerns should be communicated respectfully and through appropriate channels.
A particularly positive outcome was the willingness shown by both parties to build greater understanding. Rahman’s partner offered to introduce herself to Amina, creating an opportunity to strengthen neighbourly relations through communication, mutual respect, and shared cultural connections.
The conversation highlighted the commitment of both households to creating a calmer, more supportive environment. By listening to one another and recognising each other’s experiences, they have established a positive foundation for moving forward as neighbours.
