Rebuilding More Than an Extension

By Jo Freemantle , Portsmouth Mediation Service.
A young family commissioned a local building company to complete an extension to their home. As the project progressed, delays and communication difficulties led to frustration on both sides.
The homeowners felt stressed living in a building site with young children and worried about when the work would be finished. The builder felt under pressure, believing he was working hard to overcome challenges outside his control while trying to protect the reputation of his small business.
By the time they came to mediation, trust had broken down and communication had become difficult.
Through a restorative conversation, both parties were given the opportunity to explain the impact the situation had had on them. The family spoke about the stress and uncertainty they had experienced. The builder shared the pressures he faced managing delays, suppliers, and customer expectations.
As they listened to one another, both sides began to understand the human impact behind the dispute. Together they agreed a clear plan for completing the remaining work, improving communication, and resolving outstanding concerns.
The building work was completed, payments were agreed, and the relationship ended positively rather than through a costly and stressful legal dispute.
Sometimes the most important thing restored is not the building itself, but trust, understanding, and the ability to have difficult conversations respectfully
