A Restorative USP

Back in 2015, Portsmouth Mediation Service took a bold step and redefined our purpose through what we came to call our Restorative USP. (unique selling point) We recognised that when people needed Mediation the situation had already gone too far. We understood the toll that conflict takes, the anxiety, the stress, the strain on relationships. And so, our ambition grew. Rather than simply responding to disputes, we set out to prevent them. We began equipping teams and communities with a restorative toolkit designed to build trust, nurture positive relationships, and reduce the likelihood of conflict taking hold in the first place. In short, we set out to do ourselves out of Mediation business!

Since then, we have gathered hundreds of powerful restorative stories. Each one, in its own way, has contributed to something bigger, helping Portsmouth become a kinder, more compassionate place to live. These individual experiences have become part of a much larger narrative, shaping the day we redefined our vision: to see Portsmouth recognised as a truly Restorative City.

We also knew that if we were going to champion this vision, we had to embody it ourselves. It didn’t happen overnight, but today we are proud to be an organisation that has not only adopted but truly embedded a restorative culture. We are not perfect and we still have our moments, but we approach challenges differently now.

Our restorative ethos empowers our team to lead with purpose and compassion, to serve one another and our communities, and to take ownership of the story we are creating together. Above all, it drives us to leave a lasting legacy, one that strengthens relationships and builds more resilient, connected communities.
